(Al-Ghorba) الغربة
By the Co-Founder of the British Algerian Society, this piece reflects on الغربة, the Algerian diaspora in Britain, and why BAS was created to turn distance into connection.
With multiple roots: al-ghareeb (the stranger), the one who finds themselves distant from what is familiar, al-gharb (the West), and ghuroob (sunset). Collectively, such meanings evoke more than geographical separation. They suggest a movement away from the centre of one’s world, away from the people and places that once provided certainty and recognition. In this sense, الغربة is not merely distance.
